Way back in 2016 I created this super cute mesh bag the same way I created everything back in the day, chicken scratch that only I could decipher on whatever random scrap of paper that was in reach at the time.
At some point in 2018 I managed to write it up and begged a friend to test the pattern for me. Sadly I had to go back to my notes and rework at least half of it so that it actually made sense. Back and forth I learned and grew and finally had what I thought was a great pattern. I released it in January of 2019 and waited patiently for it to sell. I waited so patiently I completely forgot about it.
To make a long story short, when someone bought the pattern a couple weeks ago I realized I hadn't even looked at it since its release! Instead of being excited I panicked. I had no idea what it looked like and knew it was seriously subpar compared to my writing style and growth here in 2024. So off I went to make it better. It needed it!! A lot of work later and with the huge help of my amazing superhero testers I released the updated pattern, fingers crossed the original didn't scare off the poor person who bought it.
Since my goal for the year was to get some more of my older patterns updated and released here on my blog, I figured why not start with this one. I would love to see your finished makes so please come show off your work in my Facebook group and add your projects on Ravelry!

To begin CH 5 and SL to the beginning chain to connect and create a loop.
ROUND 1: CH 3 (counts as a DC), working into the center of the loop place 2DC, CH 4, Repeat [3DC, CH4] 5 times, SL to the 3rd CH of your beginning CH 3 to connect(6 chain gaps total)
ROUND 2: CH 1 (does not count as a ST), SC into next ST, CH 4, repeat [SC into the gap (the CH 4 space of the previous round), CH 4, SC into the second DC of the 3 DC group of the previous round] 5 times, CH 4, SC into the last gap, CH 4, SL into your beginning SC(12 chain gaps total)
ROUND 3: SL into the next gap and CH 3 (counts as a DC), place 3 DC in the gap, repeat [4 DC into the chain gap] 11 times, SL to the 3rd CH of your beginning CH 3 to connect(48 sts)
ROUND 4: CH 1 (does not count as a ST), beginning on the starting CH3 of the previous round, repeat (BP DC the next 4 sts, CH 1) 12 times, SL to your beginning DC to connect(60 sts counting the chains)
ROUND 5: This round is a bit tricky, you will be jumping between round 3 & round 4 for your stitch placement.
CH 5, skip 4 DC on round 3 & SC in the gap after the 4th DC, repeat [CH 5, SK 8 DC on round 4, SC into the CH 1 gap after the 8th DC, CH 5, SK 8 DC on round 3, SC in the space after the 8th DC] 5 times, CH 5, SK 8 DC on round 4, SC into the CH 1 gap after the 8th DC, SL into the first CH of the beginning CH 5(12 chain gaps total)
ROUND 6: (Now just working into the chain gaps you made in round 5) SL into the first gap and CH 1 (does not count as a ST), Place [SC, 5HDC, SC] into each gap, SL into your beginning SC to connect. (84 total sts)
NOTE: For the next round I will refer to the [SC, 5HDC, SC] in the gaps as petals.
ROUND 7: This round is a bit tricky, you will be jumping between round 4 & round 6 for your stitch placement. Work behind the petals when placing your stitches in round 4.
CH 4, HDC into the first CH 1 SP on Round 4, repeat [CH 4, now skip 2 petals on round 6 and SL into the space between the SC of the second petal and the SC of the next petal, CH 4, SK 8 DC on round 4 & HDC in the next CH 1 SP] 5 times, CH 4, now skip 2 petals on round 6 and SL into the space between the SC of the second petal and the SC of the next petal (12 chain gaps total)
ROUND 8: SL into your first CH gap, CH3, place 6 DC into the gap, Place 7 DC into each of the next 11 gaps, SL to the top of your beginning CH 3 to connect(84 total sts)
ROUND 9: CH 1 (does not count as a ST), beginning on the starting CH 3 of the previous round, BP DC every ST around, SL to your beginning DC to connect(84 total sts)
ROUND 10: CH 4 (counts as a TC) and in the same ST place [1 TC, CH 2, 2 TC] (this will count as your first corner), TC in the next ST, DC in the next 3 sts, HDC in the next 3 sts, SC in the next 6 sts, HDC in the next 3 sts, DC in the next 3 sts, TC in the next ST, repeat [(2 TC, CH 2, 2 TC) in the next ST, TC, DC next 3, HDC next 3, SC next 6, HDC next 3, DC next 3, TC] 3 times, SL to the top of your CH 4 to connect(104 total sts counting the chains)
ROUND 11: SL into the next stitch and also into the corner gap. CH 3 (counts as a DC) place [DC, CH 2, 2 DC] in the corner gap, DC 24 sts. Repeat [place [2 DC, CH 2, 2 DC] into your corner gap, DC next 24 sts] 3 times, SL to the top of your beginning CH3 to connect. (120 total sts counting the chains)
ROUND 12: SL into the next ST and also into the corner gap, CH 3 (counts as a DC) place [DC, CH 2, 2 DC] in the corner gap, Repeat [(CH 5, SK3, SC into the next stitch) 3 times, SK 4, (SC into the next ST, CH 5, SK 3) 3 times, (2 DC, CH 2, 2 DC) in the corner gap] 3 times, (CH 5, SK3, SC into the next stitch) 3 times, SK 4, (SC into the next ST, CH 5, SK 3) 3 times, SL to the top of your beginning CH 3 to connect. (6 chain 5 gaps per side)
ROUND 13: SL into the next ST and also into the corner gap., CH 3 (counts as a DC), place [DC, CH 2, 2 DC] in the corner gap, repeat [DC into the next gap, (CH 5, SC into the next gap) twice, (SC into the next gap, CH 5) twice, DC into the next gap, 2DC/CH2/2DC in the corner gap] 3 times, DC into the next gap, (CH 5, SC into the next gap) twice, (SC into the next gap, CH 5) twice, CH5, DC into the next gap, SL to the top of your beginning CH3 to connect. (4 chain 5 gaps per side)
ROUNDS 14-20: SL into the next ST and also into the corner gap, CH 3 (counts as a DC), place [DC, CH 2, 2 DC] in the corner gap, repeat [(CH 5, SC into the next gap) twice, (SC into the next gap, CH 5) twice, 2DC/CH2/2DC into your corner gap] 3 times, (CH 5, SC into the next gap) twice, (SC into the next gap, CH 5) twice, SL to the top of your beginning CH3 to connect. (4 chain 5 gaps per side)
ROUND 21: SL into the next ST and also into the corner gap, CH 1 (does not count as a ST), repeat [(2SC, CH 2, 2 SC] in the corner gap, (2 SC, 3 HDC) in the next gap,
8 DC in the next 2 gaps, (3 HDC, 2 SC) in the next gap] 4 times, SL into your first SC(128 total sts). Cut, tie off, & weave in your ends.
ALMOST DONE!!!!!
You can choose to do your handles however you like. For this example I chose to create 2 identical lace Chords and then stitched them onto the corners of the bag.
When making your beginning slip knot, leave a long enough tail to sew it to your bag.
G-Hook
ROW 1: CH 4, DC into your 1st chain, turn
ROW 2: CH 3, 7 DC into the previous CH 3 space, CH 3, SC into the first CH of foundation CH, turn
ROUND 3: CH3, 7 DC into the previous CH 3 space, CH 3, SC into the first DC stitch, turn
Repeat ROW 3 until your strap is as long as you like. I did 34 shells to make them 27” long. Attach your straps to the corner points of your bag.
