HODGEPODGE COWL PATTERN

Updated: Dec 25, 2023

When I began creating my Hodgepodge Shawl pattern about this time last year, I fell in love with it more and more as it grew & grew, but it took a lot of time and I had to fight my ADHD with every row that just wanted to be done already.

About halfway through I knew I needed a change of pace for a bit so I decided to see what else I could create with some of the same stitches I had stumbled upon. It didn't take long to decide I wanted to try a bandana cowl (which then turned into a few more cowls but that's another post).

Just like with the Hodgepodege Shawl I knew I wanted to use up my scraps. I started with one full skein to use for the first few rows, the trim, & the collar portion, then grabbed my basket of leftover Yarn Bee Soft & Sleek for the rest.

Once it was finished and through the testing process I just couldn't decide when to release it. I felt like it needed a special occasion. With nothing on the horizon, it just sat there. I felt so sorry for it I decided to create just the occasion for its release.

You should end up with 67 SC sts total. SL to your first HDC of “ROW 23”.

NOTE: If you have a different count then just adjust the next CH count so that you have the correct total number of sts for the Collar portion.

CH 21 and SL to your first CH1 of the TRIM and continue on. Make sure your piece is right side out.

COLLAR: For a larger collar change “SL in the next 4 sts of ROUND 1” to “SL in the next 3 sts of ROUND 1”. You could also add or subtract multiples of 4 to the CH before moving on to adjust the collar width.

ROUND 1: CH 1(does not count as a ST), SC in each ST & CH around, SL to your beginning SC to connect(88 total sts)

NEXT: CH 29, working back down the CH, HDC in the 2nd CH from your hook and in each CH back down to your main panel(28 sts), SL in the next 4 sts of ROUND 1 on the CH portion

*CONTINUE ON: turn & work back up your HDC sts, HDC in the FBL 27 sts, HDC in the last ST, CH 1, turn & work back down your HDC sts, HDC in the first ST, HDC in the FBL 27 sts, SL in the next 4 sts of ROUND 1

Repeat * around until you have 1 ST left on ROW 1.

To finish turn & work back up your HDC sts, HDC in the BLO 27 sts, HDC in the last ST, CH 1, turn & work back down your HDC sts, HDC in the first ST, HDC in the BL 27 sts, SL in the last ST of ROUND 1.Turn & working back up the HDC sts SL the back loop ST to the corresponding starting CH to seam the collar shut. Cut, tie off, & weave in your ends.
