Barbed Stitch Mug Rug Pattern

I am constantly trying to come up with less expensive items for craft shows to add some more variety and a larger price range of products to my stock. I absolutely adore making and using mug rugs so when I created this Barbed Stitch design, I knew it would be perfect for one.
The Barbed Stitch design uses a Spiked Double Crochet to create this awesome texture. A spike stitch is worked into the row below your normal row. In this case you will be working over a chain one gap(see video).
HERE'S WHAT YOU'LL NEED TO GET STARTED.........
Materials:
Red Heart With Love(approx. 40 yds total)
I(5.75 mm) Hook
Scissors
Needle
Abbreviations(US Terms):
SK = Skip
sts = Stitches
ST = Stitch
SL= Slip Stitch
CH = Chain
SC = Single Crochet
HDC = Half Double Crochet
DC = Double Crochet
FP = Front Post
NOTES:
* To adapt the barbed stitch to other sizes chain any multiple of 4.
* Make sure you go into the skipped ST when instructed, not the CH gap. This is also known as a “Spike Stitch”.
* Finished piece should measure 4.5”x 8”, but will stretch larger

To begin CH 24
ROW 1: SC in the 2nd CH from your hook and in the next 2 sts, repeat(CH1/SK1, SC in the next 3 sts) 5 times (23 sts)
ROW 2: CH 1(does not count as a ST) & turn, SC in the first 2 sts, FP HDC the next ST, DC in the skipped starting CH, repeat(FP HDC, SC, FP HDC, DC in the skipped starting CH) 4 times, FP HDC, SC in the last 2 sts
NOTE: "DC in the skipped starting CH" is that spike ST I was talking about.

ROW 3: CH 1(does not count as a ST) & turn, HDC in the first 3 sts, repeat(CH1/SK1, HDC in the next 3 sts) 5 times
ROW 4: CH 1(does not count as a ST) & turn, SC in the first 2 sts, repeat(FP HDC, DC in the skipped ST of the previous ROW, FP HDC, SC) 5 times, SC in the last ST
NOTE: "DC in the skipped ST of the previous ROW" is the spike ST just like the video
ROW 5: REPEAT ROW 3
ROW 6: REPEAT ROW 4
ROW 7: REPEAT ROW 3
ROW 8: REPEAT ROW 4
ROW 9: REPEAT ROW 3
ROW 10: REPEAT ROW 4
ROW 11: REPEAT ROW 3
ROW 12: REPEAT ROW 4
ROW 13/TRIM: CH 1(does not count as a ST) & turn, SC in each ST across(23),
ROTATE to work along the ROW ends, CH 1, place 1 SC in the end of each ROW(12),
ROTATE to work along the starting CH, CH 1, place 1 SC in each CH across(23),
ROTATE to work along the ROW ends, CH 1, place 1 SC in the end of each ROW(12), SL to your beginning SC to connect
ROW 14/TRIM: CH 1(does not count as a ST), DO NOT TURN, SC in each ST across(23), SL in the CH 1 gap,
ROTATE to work along the row ends, REPEAT (CH 8, SL back into the same ST, SL in the next ST) 13 times, CH 8, SL back into the same ST(which is the CH1 SP),
ROTATE to work along the bottom, SC in each ST across(23), SL in the CH1 gap,
ROTATE to work along the row ends, REPEAT (CH 8, SL back into the same ST, SL in the next ST) 14 times, SL to your beginning SC to connect. Cut, tie off, & weave in your ends to finish.
